e2 design II — Greening the Federal Government podcast
This is the second in a series of video podcasts for the PBS series e2 design II. Each podcast takes you beyond the episodes and deeper into the world of sustainable design. In this episode, architect Thom Mayne describes his philosophy toward sustainability and design. Mayne, a Pritzker Prize-winner and the architect of the San Francisco Federal Building, is a maverick and a leader in his field. He believes that people will have to adapt to new, sustainable building designs now and into the future. Major corporate funding for the e2 series is provided by Autodesk. Thom Mayne: Architecture is a new way to connect to the wor
http://www.ted.com - Thom Mayne: Architecture is a new way to connect to the worldThom Mayne doesn't see architecture as the means to build a readily imaginable structure. Rather, it's a starting point for new kinds of building -- and thus new kinds of landscapes and environments. This mind-bending talk takes us on a whistle-stop tour of the buildings Mayne and his studio Morphosis have created in recent years. From the Federal Building in San Francisco to graduate housing for the University of Toronto to the Wayne L. Morse Courthouse in Eugene, Oregon, these are big ideas cast in material form.

MIT Building, Simmon's Hall
Simmon's Hall is a dormitory located at 229 Vassar Street on the campus of MIT, designed by architect Steven Holl and dedicated in 2002. It is nicknamed "the Sponge" due to the combination of its exterior appearance and the ten multistory atria which were, in fact, inspired by a sponge. Student culture often elects SpongeBob SquarePants as an unofficial mascot. The dormitory is also seen by students as the "space waffle".
